Los Angeles Palms
The series Los Angeles Palms was inspired by 16th century German paper cutting, or Scherenschnitte, a technique often documenting silhouetted portraits of citizens. Each film frame is in its most basic graphic form, separating light and shadow, laying bare the basic principles of photography. The large grid of individual frames creates a dizzying and fragmented contrast. The palm trees were primarily photographed in fog filled skies, just before sunrise. The series explores a time when traffic and urban sounds do not exist, providing a juxtaposition to the hectic daily routine in Los Angeles.
