Permanent Projections
Permanent Projections subverts familiar symbols, forcing the viewer to see differently. The works combine the most recognizable manufactured American symbol with perhaps the most universally natural one. The cotton burial flags, which were stripped of their original color, became a fresh canvas to project new, unrealized dreams. The cloud images are sourced from a series of photographs taken from an airplane window flying across the United States. The artist realized the best way to replicate those images over the surfaces of the flags was by machine. The machine replaced hand painting the clouds and executed it more realistically. Sometimes we put our faith in, and are therefore restricted by, the industrial machine.
